Day of Ashura

يوم عاشوراء

10 Muharram every year

The Day of Ashura falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is a day of great significance for all Muslims, though observed differently by Sunni and Shia communities. For Sunni Muslims, it commemorates the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God's parting of the Red Sea. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended fasting on this day and the day before it (9th Muharram). For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day of mourning that marks the martyrdom of Imam Husayn, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Shia communities hold special mourning processions and gatherings during the first ten days of Muharram.
