About the Hijri Calendar
Solar Hijri & Persian Calendar
The Hijri calendar, also known as the Islamic or lunar calendar, is a purely lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual period of fasting and the proper time for the Hajj pilgrimage.
The calendar began in 622 CE when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated from Mecca to Medina, an event known as the Hijra. Each month begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon, which is why the calendar is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar each year.
Converting between Hijri and Gregorian dates can be done through several methods. The Tabular method uses a fixed arithmetic cycle, providing consistent results. The Umm al-Qura method follows the official Saudi Arabian calendar. The Observational method uses astronomical calculations based on lunar visibility.
Please note that actual dates may vary by 1-2 days depending on local moon sighting conditions. For religious observances, always confirm with your local Islamic authority.
