Nowruz

نوروز

1 Farvardin (Solar Hijri) — approx. March 20-21

Nowruz (meaning 'New Day') marks the first day of the Solar Hijri calendar and the beginning of spring, traditionally falling on or near March 20-21 in the Gregorian calendar. While not exclusively an Islamic holiday, Nowruz is widely celebrated by Muslims in Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Kurdish regions. It corresponds to 1 Farvardin in the Iranian calendar (or 1 Hamal in the Afghan Dari calendar). The celebration has roots going back over 3,000 years and is recognized by the United Nations as an international day. Traditions include thorough house cleaning (khane tekani), setting the Haft-sin table with seven symbolic items, visiting family and friends, and exchanging gifts. The holiday symbolizes renewal, rebirth, and the triumph of light over darkness.
